Ive just read in the Daily Mail that Qpr's Christopher Samba was racially abused on twitter...he was called of all things a negro ! Now i know before i start that the Daily mail can be very white ,and right wing but lets just take a wee look at this whole racism in football business and get a grip..
I started going on the terraces at Mansfield Town in the 1970s and in the early 1980s i would frequent the trent end at Nottingham Forest , these places were full of white young men who were looking for some outlet in their life that gave them some excitement.This tended to formulate in football violence and racism , on many occasions i can remember walking onto the North Stand at Mansfield and getting thrust a National Front leaflet in my hand , This was usually some skin headed doctor martin clad 20yr old who like me had no idea about immigration or the effects of chanting vile abuse at coloured players or anyone who happened to look odd.The songs that were sung in those days were nothing to be proud of ..."Theres no black in the union jack join the national front " was one i can recall , I would like the many around me join in singing the songs of hate like they were hymns ...But i can honestly say i was being part of a football crowd and naievely followed like a lamb.The banana throwing from the crowd was also another crass regular thing ..on many occasions i witnessed black players subjected to this sensless act.
Now you may think that i am a racist after telling you of these awful things i contributed to .Well i am not , i thought at the time it was just part of football and stupidly thought that after the game had finished that we all went home and forgot about it all.Well we probably did but i bet the poor players who in those days were a minority must have had a nightmare of a time and will never forget.
As the years passed the racist chanting ceased and Viv Anderson became the first black player to represent England from my beloved Nottingham Forest ...how proud were we! The scumbag National Front seemed to dissapear and the football took over ..although the violence seemed to stay a little longer.
So samba was called a negro!! Well ive been called lots of names through my life fat , ugly , white boy , etc but ive just got on with it just like samba should , Im not saying he should take any abuse let alone racist abuse but come on lets get real , These guys are making every remark into a major crime ,surely every time someone is berated its not going to be twisted into a hate crime..Football has come a long way since those dark days of the 70s & 80s black players are loved as much as white and young lads are coming onto the stands now with heros from every ethnic background ,the colour of the scarf should be more important than the colour of any skin , which is as it should be, players like Anderson, cunningham , Regis will prob be cringinging at some of these complaints .
Racism like violence has no place in the modern game lets hope sence proveils and the press along with the politically correct dont bring back the leaflet pushing facist ...
